About the position

The Senior Designer Technical Apparel combines active product use, a strong understanding of today‘s sport cultures, market knowledge and input from design team members to create original and innovative designs. By product testing and constant exposure to outdoor industry trends, design changes and innovations the Senior Designer Technical Apparel must create designs that embrace Salewa´s core design philosophy which is to create product that is of the highest quality, function, fit and with all fabrication done in a considered manner.

While the Senior Designer Technical Apparel will contribute to the overall development of the Company’s design concepts for a given season, s/he will be primarily responsible for the design- and engineering of innovative and technologically advanced products that meet the needs of todays mountain athletes.

The Senior Designer will share industry experiences with other co-workers through preliminary designs, mentoring and professional skill building. 

 Essential Job Functions: 

Responsible for the creation of relevant, innovative design concepts for each season for a specific category.

Communicate and present concepts and design information in a concise and professional manner whether in a verbal, written or visual context.

Play a lead role in ensuring the cross-pollination of design concepts and ideas with other designers and teams. In collaboration and cooperation with General Manager, Creative Director & Product Line Managers, create seasonal line plans and strategic initiatives.

Collaborate with the appropriate Product Line Manager, Product Developer, Pattern Maker and factories to engineer products that achieve design concepts while meeting target retail and margin goals.

Identify appropriate color direction and colors specific to the products of responsibility.

Assume a leadership role in championing designs through 2D design review. Thereafter - in partnership with Product Developers & Fabric Team - develop fabrics, trims and manufacturing strategies for the products of responsibility.

Provide product information through detailed drawings and thorough checklists to Pattern Makers and Product Developers so that prototypes and BOMs can be created in a timely manner.

Partner with Product Developers in providing detailed and complete checklist information when working with factories direct. Participate in Company sponsored design- & product testing trips to connect with athletes, brand ambassadors and retail. 

Required Qualifications:

+6 years of related professional experience in the outdoor- or technical sports industry.

Bachelor's Degree in Product (Apparel) Design or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Participation and understanding of the sports that the Company produces products for.

Highly developed skills in design to include but not limited to sketching, concept ideation, technical 2D drawings, color- and trend theory, visual presentation and graphic art skills.

3D skill set preferred.

Strong ability to design for different consumers and end uses with extreme attention to detail.

Strong knowledge of formulating color palettes.

Excellent communications skills, including the ability to present concepts & guide product teams.

Comprehensive understanding of garment construction, pattern making & textiles.

Strong knowledge of product cycles and development process.

Proven ability to establish and maintain schedules.

Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to demonstrate flexibility on the job.

Must be able to travel internationally and domestically utilizing various transportation methods.
